Experience Pierre Like a Local
Summer is in full swing, which means your vacation planning is, too. Whether you’re still looking for a destination or want to add another stop to your road trip, don’t miss Pierre, South Dakota. We have all the activities you need to fill your itinerary: from an overnight stay to a week-long getaway. And each one comes recommended by locals, so you know it’s good. Check it out!
You might already know us for the Missouri River: people come year-round for the “fisherman’s paradise” you’ll find at the Ramkota Pierre hotel. (If you haven’t heard, our chef will even prepare your catch of the day for your supper.)
Not a fishing fan? There’s plenty of other outdoor recreation and river activities! See a breathtaking side of Pierre from the deck of The Sunset, “the last authentic Paddlewheeler” on the river—and the summer’s most unforgettable attraction. Whether you’re bringing the whole family or enjoying a romantic night out, The Sunset is a new way to experience the best of Pierre.
As the state capital, we know a thing or two about making sure visitors get the best that South Dakota has to offer. Our capitol building is something spectacular, with beautiful architecture inside and out. And it’s located within a four-block radius of state memorials and the Governor’s mansion. You can stop by during business hours for a self-guided tour, or call and schedule a guided one in advance!
We’re also known for Lake Oahe and the Oahe Dam, one of the world’s largest earth-rolled dams. Dedicated in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, this awesome structure is named after a Sioux Indian word meaning "a foundation," or "a place to stand on,” and it’s easy to see why. It provides many Midwestern states with irrigation, conservation, flood control, and electric power. Schedule a tour to see how the dam works, from the inside out! And if you think that’s impressive, you should see the sunset from here.
You’re going to need energy for all those adventures, and we know just the place. Zesto is your can’t-miss restaurant, and Pierre’s favorite summer hangout: you’ll see people standing in line as much for the homemade ice cream as for friendly conversation. And no trip is complete without “the Uncle Matt,” an original dessert made with vanilla ice cream and piled with hot fudge, crushed peanuts, banana slices, whipped topping, and—of course—a cherry on top.
Ramkota Pierre also offers two in-house restaurants, but we know it’s summer vacation and you want to explore. So if you choose to venture out, we recommend the Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse for the best steak in town.
See for Yourself!
Make Pierre, South Dakota, your vacation destination this summer, and be ready to make a new tradition. We’ll have the rooms ready for you.
